Most of us have heard a bump in the night and how do we react? We run to hide under the covers and await dawn. We keep quiet about it until someone else in the household speaks up about the situation. Until, then we don’t get up to use the bathroom at night, make sure there is a big bottle of water on the night stand and keep the covers above the head at all times.

But what if all such events never occurred at night but at daytime? When the sun was shining bright and you were wide awake planning your day? Sounds unbelievable? I thought so too but then things slowly began to make more sense. One thing I learnt from this experience was that never second guess yourself because these ghosts, spirits, entity – whatever name you prefer to give them, they certainly do exist in our world. Let me tell you how it all began.

I shifted to a new flat a year ago. I didn’t get acquainted with any neighbors except for the airhostess, next door. Tara was a typical flight attendant with exquisite features, hourglass figure and the make-up with the tight-fitted uniform, turned a lot of heads.

We got along like two pods in a pea and I really missed her company on the nights she was away across continents. Often, she got me souvenirs and I kept some dinner for her when I knew she would be home late.

I rarely visited her flat as she preferred to come over and lounge in my room. I didn’t mind it though. One evening, she looked very pale and distraught.

“Do you know who lived in your flat before you moved in?” she asked.

“No, not really. As far as I know these flats have been newly constructed and we are the first ones here.”

That seemed to have consoled her a bit. But she changed the topic and told me about this new guy she met in-flight.

Few days later, she asked me if I could water her plants while she was away. She gave me a set of her keys and said she would be away for a week or so. I really didn’t mind it. I am an artist so a change of venue for my creativity is always welcome.

Her flat was neatly styled. It was minimal yet inviting. She had a lot of ferns, aromatic herbs and roses neatly arranged in her balcony. Sunlight glared brightly through her French windows and the fragrance of the flowers swept across the rooms. I went to check if she had any leftovers that needed to be discarded and I stepped into her kitchen.

A draft of chilled air brushed past my face giving me goose bumps. It did surprise me but I didn’t think of it much. I checked on the contents of the fridge and left for the day.

My flat was designed in such a way that the passage connecting from my living room to my study overlooked her kitchen window. I am sure you must be wondering why I am suddenly describing my floor plan in the middle of this story but this is vital later on.

I went about my household chores as usual and as I was about to enter my study, I felt someone was watching me from Tara’s kitchen window. I took a step back and looked again, but there was no one. It seemed a little weird but it could have been a reflection from the windows from the flat downstairs.

Couple of days later, I found someone standing and looking on my side of the flat from the kitchen window. I walked to the passage to check but again there was no one. I was sure it wasn’t Tara because if she had returned she would have definitely drop in to tell me that she was back and also her windows would be open.

Slowly, this became a regular feature. Every time, I would step into my study from the corner of my eye I could sense someone was standing and looking through the kitchen window. When I looked closer there was no one. I didn’t stop watering the plants but made a quick dash, poured the water and hurried back.

One morning, I thought- “I am being silly; let me go to the kitchen and check. Maybe there is a cupboard and its refection is creating a shadow effect.”

With a positive and open mind, I walked into her kitchen. Suddenly, a mesh of cobweb fell over my face. I felt extremely cold. I could feel the hair at the back of my neck stand up. I stood frozen for a second and scrambled to reach the sanctity of my own home. I sat panting for eternity-well that’s how I felt then.

The same night, Tara was back. She was her jovial self and told me all the exotic locations she travelled. She did notice my anxiety and my lack of enthusiasm in looking at her travel photos. I was lost in thought, wondering if I should share these episodes with her. I decided I would tell her eventually but not today. I needed to rest and figure out the best way to break this paranormal situation to her.

Tara had few days of leave and stayed at her place sleeping most of the day. Evenings she would come over and we would chat up. We were enjoying our tea in my study and I was seated in the corner where I could see her kitchen window. I consciously looked away and Tara sensed my distraught look.

“It may sound silly,” she said “but I really get freaked out at my place.”

“What you mean?” I asked.

“I feel someone is watching me all the time. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is but I feel someone is watching me from behind. I really don’t know how to explain this. I know you must think I am on dope.”

“No, I understand exactly what you mean.”

Now was my chance to give her all the details of the incident.

“Who do you think it is? The previous owner?”

“Tara, this is a new building. We are the first ones here. But I agree there is something or someone’s spirit that is lurking. It knows that it has got our attention. So far no harm has been done so at least we know it’s not violent.”

“Thanks for the reassurance but I am not going to sleep there tonight. I am staying with you.”

“That’s no problem but then we have to find a solution to get rid of it otherwise it can come over to this flat too.”

“What you mean? It will follow us here?”

“Why not? It makes me uncomfortable in my flat. What is stopping it from come here?”

That night, we sat and researched on the internet and found out about different cleansing rituals. We bought all the things listed and started trying it out from the following morning. There was uneasiness and of course we were scared but we kept at it and after a month of cleansing, it left and went away.

The kitchen seems warm and inviting now. There never were any cobwebs but somehow on that day, it appeared out of the blue. Everything has settled down and the kitchen is no longer haunted.

The ruins of Bhangard, Alwar in the state of Rajasthan stands as testament of royalty, riches and its downfall. This 16th century fort palace was once an iconic kingdom.

Today, this palace is labeled as a heritage site by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and yet they have taken no steps to restore its past glory. Instead, there is a warning sign outside the gates of this palace that visitors are warned not to wander around after sunset.

The ASI had primarily decided to open an office within the palace grounds but later preferred to stay a kilometer away from this location.

So is Bhangard palace really haunted? To get this answer, we will have to travel back in time, 500 years ago.

The majestic Bhangard palace is still surrounded by Aravali mountain ranges, almost guarding it from the outside world. But no one could have ever guessed that its downfall would have happened from within. It is strongly believed by locals that the ruins of Bhangard resulted from a curse, yelled in despair by a Tantric, practitioner of negative forces.

The tantric was charmed by the radiant beauty of the queen Ratnavali. He was so enamored that he secretly used to watch her bathe in the royal pond. When he could no longer control his lust, he decided to get her in his control. He used a mantra known as Vashikaran mantra (Vash means to control someone like a puppet). With the help of Tantra Vidya (Knowledge of Tantric Studies), he added the mantra in oil, then he told the royal maid to give the oil to the queen. He was aware that the queen habitually applied oil all over her body before bathing. In this way, he would gain total control over her mind and body.

Queen Ratnavali too knew Tantra Vidya so when the maid handed her the oil, she knew at once what the special ingredient in the oil was. She poured this oil on a rock in her garden. No sooner had she done this, the rock flew and smashed the Tantric’s head. The bleeding Tantric cursed the kingdom that all the stones of this palace would crumble down.

There are several temples within the castle’s premise and yet people say that curse still lingers the grounds. An evil presence lurks causing a shiver in every passerby’s spine. Some historians believe in this cursed legend while others state that the battle between Ajabgard and Bhangard caused the downfall of this kingdom. While others contemplate that Raja Mansingh Savoy had indeed attacked this fort palace.

Visitors are strictly forbidden to roam the grounds after sunset. People practicing Tantra Vidya are said to dwell in these grounds and harness negative energy from the evil surrounding the area. Is this superstition or a legend to make this place attractive to ghost hunters is yet to be researched. But for now, no one from the surrounding region goes there to seek thrills or answers from the beyond.

Does an evil child exist? Children can be naughty, mischievous, a little disobedient or sometimes violent. But seriously, can they really be termed as anomaly of the dark forces?

Many popular movies have chosen children as evil characters like the Prodigal son, Omen (The movie series depicts the life of the devil’s child who grows into adulthood spreading evil. It’s in five parts).

Exorcist also shows a young girl being possessed with evil forces. In the movie The Ring, the tragedy strikes a young girl and she comes back for revenge.

An evil mother goes door to door delivering her children in happy families. She leaves her newborn in a large family and disappears. The adorable baby is forced to be looked after by the concerned family that is already is filled with kids. This child is actually evil who slowly kills all the other children to become the only child of the family. This may sound silly but the movie – God’s Gift did have a lot of fan following in the early eighties.

Children are truly made to look ghastly in most Japanese movies with ash complexion and jet black contact lens. They hide in crevices, lofts and wardrobes creating a sinister backdrop to the movie like in Grudge I and Grudge II.

The latest movie to add to this list of evil children is Orphan. As the name suggests a child is adopted to a loving home of two children. This child then starts showing her true colors of controlling the lives of the inhabitants of the household. But this movie did turn on the tables in the end when it turned out that she wasn’t really a child but pretending to be one.

Personally, I can never believe that there can be evil boy or an evil girl. A child can never be evil unless he is trained to be one since his early age. His environment could be a negative, surrounding him with violence but he certainly cannot be born with such traits.

But the brutal truth is that many filmmakers use children as evil characters. Are they deriving their themes from real life situations? If so, where do evil children come from? Your insights and views will be valuable.

Believing in evil spirits, ghosts and dark forces is considered silly and ridiculous. Most people want proof of such existence and feel that everything can be explained logically. But why is it then evil eye bracelets, eye of Horus pendants, eye evil charms and evil eye protection kits are widely available everywhere.

The most popular among evil eye protection jewelry are the Turkish evil eye bracelets. These unisex bracelets are worn not just by Turkish locals but are popular worldwide. They have a strong base in India too. Large evil eye talismans are hung in cars, outside the main door and in shops. Some people who want to remain inconspicuous, purchase evil eye key chains and carry it without making a fashion statement. A salon I visit has a gigantic evil eye hung on their wall. It is placed strategically that when anyone enters their premise, they are forced to notice it.

All evil eye pendants and charm bracelets are not to steer clear of ghosts but it is to keep them safe from evil eye. This evil eye can be referred to any person’s nasty vision that is jealous of another person. Some individuals are so full of negative energy that their energy expels out through their vision, choice of words and action. That negative energy depending on its intensity can affect another innocent person. So to keep the mind and body safe from such energies, people wear such pendants and talismans to safe guard themselves.

Various gemstones are also known to protect individuals from evil like tiger eye stone, lapis lazuli, jasper and so on. The power of such stones, gives the wearer tranquility and stability of mind to fight off such negative sources.

Many cultures have different practises to ward off evil. In India, people hang a lemon, five-long-green chillies, and a piece of charcoal. These are pierced, held together with a thread and hung outside homes, offices, newly purchased vehicles etc to keep the negative, jealous vibes of their neighbors away. They are hung for a week and replaced with fresh ones on every Saturday.

Some people choose special masks, while others prefer using bison horn to hang outside their main entrance to keep away negativity. There are others who firmly believe in Feng Shui techniques and keep small bowls of salt at every corner of their house or rooms for negative vibes to get absorbed.

Americans burn sage and circulate the smoky air of sage around their rooms, house and backyard whenever they feel there is a source of negativity or evil lurking around. Some sprinkle holy water, read passages of the Bible to ward off evil energy.

Negative vibes, bad energies can be from the living and the dead. We can at least understand when a fellow companion or friend is jealous of our success or happy, family life. But there is no way to know if these vibes are from those who have passed away. Talismans and evil eye bracelets do work if you believe in them. The rest depends on your fate and good deeds done in this lifetime.

Ghosts, apparitions linger everywhere and my experiences have led me to believe that they are with you even when you need to spend a penny. For those who use a different currency, I meant that ghosts are with you in the toilet as well. My previous post – The Haunted Bathroom Stall will clarify exactly what I mean.

Traditionalists in Tokyo believe that ghosts hide in bathrooms. The residents construct their lodgings in such a way that the toilets are located in the back areas of the house. They follow this principle as it is closely associated with their religious beliefs. Some children dread going to the toilets especially at night as some parents and elders take this opportunity to tease and scare little children into believing that the ghosts will pull them down into the dark hole of the loo. Sounds like a good way to discipline them.

These incidents seem to have inspired Koji Suzuki. Does the name sound familiar? I am sure if it doesn’t, his previous work – Ring, will certainly tingle your memory. This movie was made in Japanese and English versions and certainly had created a rave few years ago. It definitely topped my list of best horror movies.

Koji Suzuki has found a unique way to get close to his fans and this time with a sinister twist. His new story “Drop” is set in a public restroom. No big deal right? Hold on, there is more… This story will be printed on three feet roll of toilet paper. Each roll will carry several copies of nine chapter novella with a price tag of 2.20$ a roll. This will definitely revolutionize the toilet paper industry.

After reading Drop, I am sure, one doesn’t need to indulge in a high fibre diet at breakfast; the scare will definitely do the trick. Wink!!

One of my globe-trotting adventures enticed me to Tibet. To reach this destination, I had to pass the Chinese border and complete the immigration formalities. After several hours of waiting in line at Nepal, my passport details were finally entered into their system and I crossed to the other side.

The rest of my group didn’t want to proceed ahead until they had tucked in authentic local cuisine. They stumbled upon the first restaurant in sight and with feasting eyes surveyed the menu. Few of them, couldn’t wait to order while others were discussing the specialty of the day.

I ordered soup and decided to freshen up. I left my backpack with my friends to regain the flexibility of my spine. The restaurant didn’t seem to display any signs or symbols indicating a restroom so I went to inquire at the reception. The lobby was buzzing with backpackers, all waiting endlessly to check in. Though the place was a little shabby, (Well, one can’t expect Hilton at the border of two countries) but the people around didn’t seem to mind and many waited to get a table at the restaurant.

“Excuse me, Can you tell me where the restroom is?” I asked.

A woman behind the counter pointed upstairs. I dashed up the carpeted stairway only to find a blind turn. I followed it and found a landing. To my left and right, there was continuous array of rooms. The corridor was pitch black and silent. It didn’t seem like the rooms were occupied. Only the landing where I stood was lit up. I couldn’t even hear the buzz of chatter from the reception. It just didn’t feel right.

I ran down the stairs, contemplating whether I really needed to use the facilities. Then I calculated the distance and hours we needed to travel to reach the base camp by sunset, and of course, I had ordered soup.

I walked up to the lady again, “I can’t find it. Can you show me?”

She kept pointing up. I shook my head. “I can’t find it.” I said, repeatedly. But the woman didn’t seem interested to climb the twenty odd stairs and help me out

A young waitress passing from the kitchen, decided to intervene.

“Follow me,” said the doll-faced waitress.

She took me to the same landing and then took a left turn. We walked in complete darkness and found light at the end of the corridor. She smiled, bowed and left.

I stepped into the lighted restroom. Two sinks with dripping taps broke the intimidating silence. I pushed open the slightly ajar bathroom stall only to retreat instantly. It wasn’t fit for use. So I waited hoping the other shut stall would soon be vacant. I coughed, hoping that the user of the second stall would understand that someone was waiting for their turn. I paced the floor, glancing time to time at the gloomy mirrors.

To my surprise, I noticed that the entrance of the restroom didn’t have a door. Neither did it have a sign nor a picture depicting ladies or gents. Now, the muscles of my kidneys were getting strained and they definitely needed to relax. I tapped lightly on the bolted stall door. But there was still no answer. The dripping taps made things even worse. I had to go and there was no turning back. I took deep breaths- inhaled, exhaled, then held my breath and walked in. I really had to get over with it. In situations like these, I wished that I was a man.

The floor was slippery but I managed to maintain my balance. Next, the door wouldn’t shut. I pushed it, but it returned to its original position, slightly ajar. I thought maybe it would be okay, since there wasn’t a soul around. Then I realized that this could be a unisex bathroom. I pushed hard and pounded with all my strength and finally managed to close the door. I couldn’t help but turned around to see the stall. The area was really large and it was one of those facilities where the commode was embedded in the floor.

An unusual feeling swept over me. My attention was drawn to a corner of the stall and in a split second, I saw a girl sitting there with dark, flowing hair. She looked almost like Samara in the movie, The Ring. Goosebumps prickled my skin. I squatted on the floor to empty my bladder. Suddenly, I got a feeling that whoever was in the adjoining stall would spread their arms and grab my legs. Things got even worse; my kidneys were planning to set a new world record of storing over ten gallons of fluid and the water was trickling out at a very slow pace. My inner voice was ordering me- Get Out Now.

I hurriedly zipped up and tried to dash out, but the door was stuck. There was no handle from the inside. I was trapped. Like a fool, I had left my waist pouch in my backpack. It had my cell phone and prayer beads. Fear was slowly creeping in. A part of me dismissed that I had seen that girl who resembled Samara. But why would I think of the movie now. I stood calmly for a second and rationalized my thinking- “I am in China and the girls at the reception looked like movie characters.”

I was terrified to bang the door. I didn’t want to disturb the tranquility of the space and I was afraid that the banging could jam the door further. The eerie feeling lingered and something was forcing me to turn back at the wall. I didn’t want to witness what had flashed in front of my eyes few seconds ago. I felt helpless but I refused to give in. I stood on my toes and tried pulling the door from the edge. I struggled and struggled until my sweaty palms finally felt the wooden door loosen.

I ran. I stumbled in the pitch black corridor but never looked back. My heart was pounding while the veins in my temples were throbbing. Mentally I visualized my escape route. My freedom was destined if I took the first right turn. And I succeeded. I retraced my way down the stairs. Breathless and sweating profusely, I reached to my seat.

“Where were you?” asked Sage. “Sorry, we started without you.”

I collapsed on the chair and sat in silence. I skipped lunch, making an excuse that it was cold.

As I write this incident, that feeling of dread creeps in and prickles my skin again. I know whatever was lingering in that bathroom stall was certainly real.

©Nayna, 2007-2009. Television shows also add fuel to this ghost hunting fire and rekindled many legends.

Students and young adults are first to hunt for locations that claim to be haunted. They even go to abandoned houses and office buildings looking for something paranormal. Hazing is common among them and at times, they dare their friends to spend a night camped in empty houses, dingy cottages and even forests.

The movie Blair Witch Project is a classic example of teenagers exploring unknown places searching for something out there, to get famous. They rarely think of the consequences and all they seek is the thrill. Urban legends spring up from time to time and they go out to prove they are real and not just a myth.

Many try out séance and call out to spirits. What they fail to understand that only the evil ones linger. The good souls pass to the higher level. The wicked and treacherous souls hang around because they are afraid to move on because they know what it will be like on the other side. They would have to face the hellish tortures for their bad deeds done in their lifetime.

These evil souls then capture the mind and body of the innocent souls and enjoy controlling them. They use the teenage minds and bodies to satisfy their unfulfilled desires and also seek revenge on those who had troubled them when they were alive. Ouija board is used by most people for a night of fun and adventure without knowing the right technique and devoid of a spirit guide.

Most of the curious people go to libraries to look for spells, recipes for magic portions, to find ways to put a curse on people, how to make voodoo dolls and capture ghosts. But what they don’t realise that even if they succeed in bringing a ghost to respond to them, how will they make it go back.

Haunting occurs most of the time when the spirits are called and then they are not sent back to where they came from. The spirits hang around and instead seek thrill troubling the ones who summoned them. Book of horrors, directory of spells and many such books are widely sorted after. Only a trained spiritualist or medium will know how to respect these souls and request them to go back.

Different cultures have their perspective about life after death, the soul and their migration to the other side. Ancient rituals are carried out and most of them are related with the departing of the soul from the body.

Respecting the dead and allowing them to remain in their plane is the best way to lead a peaceful and productive life.

Our cheeks needed some coloring and who can resist the charm of Mickey Mouse and his gang. We had a wonderful ten day stay there and participated in every possible activity. I will engage you in our fun-filled family adventure at Disneyworld in our next posts.

One evening, we decided to stay back late at Magic Kingdom to see the fireworks. The magnificent World Showcase at Epcot had enthralled us so we had to see the firework extravaganza here as well.

Before the fireworks could begin there was a parade with glittering carriages and dancing bears, glowing fishes, cute pigs all dressed up and glowing in lights. They passed through the main street with such pomp and gaiety that most people felt like dancing along with them, swaying to the beat.

Next Tinker Bell, flew down from the Magic castle waving at everyone and the crowd went “OOH!!” and a loud round of applause followed. Well, she was at a very high altitude and deserved all the credit for it.

To add to this excitement, the illuminated Magic Castle kept changing it colors. It was a spectacular site and I couldn’t resist but take pictures of every color change. Each shade created a different image of the castle. Now I know why Walt Disney gave this castle the name, Magic Kingdom.

As I continued snapping pictures, I could see the orbs on all of them. Some faint ones while others with immense density and depth. Some orbs almost looked like the Moon.

All living beings born are meant to die some day. But the nature of their death and the means to their end, makes a big difference.

In Hinduism, it is believed that the last thought that you have trapped in your mind at the time of death, decides on your rebirth and in which form.

So what happens to those who die a terrorizing death? The people who are trapped as hostages, terrorized in the hands of assailants holding weapons of destruction or those innocent victims who are lined up to be shot at. What would be their last thoughts?

Apprehension, trauma, helplessness…

Some could be thinking of their parents, spouse and children. The feeling of despair and knowing that they will die with a bullet hole in their head is certainly a ruthless way to die.

Sudden death due to terror can cause souls to become earthbound. There could be several reasons connected to this. For some, it could be because they are not ready to die, others want to say good-bye to their loved ones while others cannot understand that they are really dead. If a person has died at their workplace in a bomb blast, they can be earthbound mainly because that is a familiar place which they remember before death.

These wandering souls could be trapped for some time until proper rituals are conducted so that their souls can crossover. Many resist crossing over because they want to communicate with their loved ones and make amends. The thoughts and attachments for their family hold them back. It could also be that the souls maybe ready to move on but it is the family members and their unresolved issues that pull them back.

To end this tug of war between souls and material world, what should be done? Families should conduct the last rites according to their religion and forgive those who have passed away. Keep aside resentments and fill their hearts with love towards them. It is very easy to say to stop grieving but it should be curtailed otherwise the souls really find it hard to move on. The rest should be left to HIM.

We all enjoy a good ghost story. Our imagination perks up further when we are told that the incident was a real one. Some feel envious of those who have had firsthand encounter with ghosts and spirits. This thrill to be a part of the unknown lingers silently in many. Some satisfy this need by reading books, watching scary movies while others go scouting for haunted locations.

There are many unanswered questions regarding haunting. Many quest for answers like – Why are places haunted? Does it mean if someone dies that location automatically becomes spooky? Do ghosts and apparitions only lurk in castles and pubs? And the lists continue…

A place is regarded as haunted when an entity or ghost is attached to that area. It could be because of sudden untimely death, suicide or murder. The soul is trapped in that event and roams around trying to find its killer or just lost in that anguish. This is usually termed by paranormal investigators as “traditional haunting.”

There are various instances where paranormal researchers have found that spirits don’t haunt their homes but a public place or hotel. This could be due to the attachment to that place or a person who is associated to that place.

On many occasions it has been seen that employees of a hotel or pub tend to haunt their workplace. It could be that these souls don’t know where to go after death and like to be attached to the place where they spent most of their life.

They could be used to a routine and find it comforting to be at a place which is familiar to them. Some may not even be aware that they are dead and continue working. When they find other people (living beings) using their space then they get annoyed and show signs of retaliation. This we see as a haunting.

Ninety percent of the time the hauntings are caused due residual energy. This residue of energy is unconnected to specific entities. It is the imprint left by several people over the years and sometimes even centuries back. This is one of the reasons why at many places like hotels, theatres, pubs, museums, train stations we hear footsteps, tapping and other strange noises.

Ghostly sightseeings are always debateable and few hotel owners use this as a good marketing gimmick to allure enthusiasts to explore their hotel. So the next time, you see shadowy figures rest assured that you are not losing your mind but among the others who understand the secrets of the paranormal world.
