These luxury skincare products contain certain ingredients that claim to stop the signs of early ageing and slow down the sagging of skin.

Smart packaging, exotically perfumed products, repeated advertising and celebrity endorsements of such products, automatically get the attention of the average working women. These luxury skincare products claim to be made from caviar, royal jelly, crushed pearls, sea minerals and many more are said to be extracted from rare plants and herbs which erases wrinkles and promotes a youthful glow. Here is a list of what all these luxurious ingredients can do for your skin.

Gold: Yes, flecks of gold are used in many face gels and face packs. It is said that gold speeds up the blood circulation and cellular processing thus activating regeneration. It also works deeply into the skin and restores elasticity. Its anti-inflammatory properties decreases skin inflammation, slowing down melanin secretion and reducing age spots. As it works at the cellular level, it helps to regenerate a firm skin and gives a feeling of tightness to the skin.

Caviar: Caviar possesses antioxidant properties that protect the skin from ultra violet damage. It contains a lot of amino acids, mineral salts, structural proteins and a whole lot of vitamins A, D, E, F, iron which are easily absorbed in the skin.

Pearl: Pearl powder has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to maintain youthfulness. This has now been incorporated in many ranges of cosmetics like compact, blusher, eye shadow, lipsticks and in skin whitening creams and lotions.

Saffron: Saffron adds a delicate flavor to make variety of food and desserts but it has its application in beauty products as well. Saffron soaked in milk and consumed gives virility and stamina to the body. Saffron is widely used in cosmetics to promote fairness of skin. Its anti-bacterial properties are used in creams to relieve acnes, dark patches and blemishes on skin.

Ageing process cannot be reversed but these exotic ingredients claim to reduce the speed of sagging and wrinkled skin. If you have a yearning desire to look younger with the passing of age and have the means to afford them, then they will surely help you reach your beauty goals.

Spas in Mumbai have been mushrooming at every neighborhood corner and mall. Each of them tries to create a niche and attract the naïve, over-worked and stressed Mumbai people.

Most of the exhausted, middle and upper working class seeks out spas within their residential area so that they can enjoy some luxury without having to wrestle the humongous traffic that Mumbai is famous for.

I too fall in this category of people who want to unwind and desire to be transported few miles away into a galaxy where they can live like royalties and have attendants looking after their every need.

The Ayush Therapy Centre started by Lever was truly a divine place to settle in on a Sunday afternoon. I said “was” because their branch at Khar West closed down and moved to Lokhandwala near Fame Adlabs. The setup at Ayush was well-maintained, hygienic and the therapists really understood your physical and mental requirements before assigning any type of massage. Their packages were reasonably priced and they were trained in the art of customer satisfaction. The best part of their immaculate service was serving a glass of lukewarm water which seemed like a concoction of freshly ground cumin seeds and herbs, after a steaming yet relaxing shower. That’s a true sign of customer service which builds into strong customer relationship and retention. A customer automatically develops an invisible bond of royalty. Value for money four out of five rating based on my experience.

Another wonderful place for Ayurvedic massage is the Kerala Ayurvedic massage centre located at Prabhadevi. Here too great care is taken to understand the ailments of a person and appropriate herbs are mixed in oils and massaged into the body. The only drawback here is lying on slippery hard benches for massages. Value for money three out of five rating based on my experience.

Couple of months old is yet another spa called Iosis located at the junction of Khar Danda. It calls itself Medi-Spa and includes slimming centre, massages, salon and spa treatments. Initially, it didn’t advertise much and the information was leaked out through friends at the club and gym. The ambience creates larger than life experiences with candles, dimmed light fixtures and kneeling life-sized statues. Their brochure lists a lot of services and over-enthusiastic girls across the counter explain them. When I inquired I wasn’t aware that this spa was a part of Shilpa Shetty’s business venture. She did appear on the walls and brochures but then all celebrities endorse anything and everything nowadays.

Later, I came to about it when one of my relative was badly treated at their opening ceremony. A relative of mine too had signed up for a massage package and had asked the masseuse to take an appointment on a particular date. At the appointed time when she reached there, the receptionist said that she had no appointment and told her to come back tomorrow. The rude attitude didn’t go well with my aged relative and she asked her to call the masseuse who took the appointment. She waited patiently to be attended to. In the meantime, the owner of this spa was hustling bustling around to get the inauguration ceremonies done (although, there were no guests around). She instructed her staff to move the chairs, indirectly hinting that my relative should get up. After waiting for twenty minutes with no help from the receptionist, my relative had no choice but to leave, labeled more as a trespasser than a member of this brand of luxury spa.

The massages done here have exotic names but are very average. The aroma therapy massage is a joke because there is no fragrance of any aromatic oils. You will actually have to ask the attendant, “Are you using aromatic oil? What fragrance is it?” One of the best aroma massages that I have relished was at the spa, Taj Fort Aquada, Goa. This divine experience is engraved in my mind and body so deeply that it is almost unerasable. They had an amazing combination of oils which by mere inhalation relaxes you. Before the onset of the massage, you already feel rejuvenated. Here their aromatic facials, hair treatments too are commendable.

Facials at Iosis when compared with facials at VLCC or Lakme salon fall short. They seem to be using imported products from Germany but somehow they don’t seem to give effective results. While the facials at VLCC and their products are truly valuable. Lakme salon at Juhu too provides facials that have value for money and give the desired effect.

Staff management at VLCC is extremely good. While the staff at Iosis forgets to jot down appointments, give payment receipts of another customer and then scratch it out and write down your name. They perennially never have hot water. So after a massage you either take a chilled shower or go out with oil-stained body and take a shower at home. Value for money – one out of five rating based on my experience.

VLCC centre at Juhu has recently launched a day spa experience. I have yet to try it out. If anyone has had the opportunity to experience it, then do write in. Our readers would love to know.

So what should you keep in mind before signing in for spa and salon packages?

1) Take a trial offer. Make sure the products and treatments agree with you. The Swedish massage at Iosis was the worst massage of my life. The masseuse refused to reduce pressure while giving me a massage inspite of constantly telling her that it is causing immense pain. As I complained at the reception of the excruciating massage, I was told, my body is new to Swedish massage and I will just have to get used to it. The following three days, I spent in pain as my joints ached and I had fever. The body ache could be compared to the symptoms of viral fever. After consultation with my family doctor, it was clear that the pressure was too hard that didn’t suit my joints and nerve endings. It had nothing to do with getting used to a massage.

2) Compare prices with other spas and salons before signing on the dotted line.

3) If there is any pain or allergy caused after the spa treatment, immediately consult your doctor and do not take the advice of the salon or spa.

4) Make sure if there is an option for a refund. Most places don’t have this facility. Ask if your spa package is transferrable to a friend or relative. In a situation where some treatment doesn’t suit you and it’s already paid for in advance, then someone else could use it.

Most people look for services that provide value for money. They are even willing to pay a hefty sum for few hours of complete mind and body relaxation. But falling short on service is not an ideal way to develop customer loyalty. Of course, most spas don’t care what individual members think or feel about their services because their audience is aimed for a different class of people of a particular field of profession, but they should take a moment to think that their money too is hard earned and they are also paying customers.

©Nayna, 2007-2009. All Rights Reserved.

Birthdays are meant for celebration. A day with special meaning connected with you bringing joy and happiness to your household. Birthday is a joyous occasion. It depends on how an individual feels about birthdays.

Young adults are in a hurry to get older while those in their mid-twenties worry about ageing. Men and women in their thirties dilly dally in admitting their correct age while those in their forties begin a new innings of their life.

Most of us plan a small event to celebrate birthdays. It could be an intimate gathering of friends and family sharing a meal or taking friends out for a movie and dinner or going for a romantic night out with your partner or husband. But what if the person or friends who you cherish the most forgets about your birthday?

Belated birthday wishes are most annoying. If you have forgotten then forget about it totally. Wishing someone with belated birthday wishes means nothing. It shows you in poor light. It clearly indicates that you don’t care enough about the person. If you did, then you would have wished on the apt day.

I agree, it is not always possible to remember everyone’s birthday but there are simple ways to make people aware that you care. There are various online birthday reminder software’s available where you can add your friends list of birthdays and anniversaries. You can make use of your mobile phone’s notes and add the birthday date and keep an alarm as reminder. Various online e-cards have the facility of sending your chosen card and message on the exact birthday, and this facility is free. They maintain a good database where you can prepare and queue your e-card a month in advance.

Sending your friend belated birthday sms or text messages is another sure shot way to make the person know how indifferent you are. A phone call is the ideal way to apologize instead of a belated birthday wishes e-card or sms.

Birthday comes only once a year. If you care about the person then you will make sure that you don’t miss the opportunity to wish them well. If you have forgotten your girlfriend’s birthday then rest assured that an apology will never work unless you were struggling between life and death. You will have work extra hard to make it up to her. Make a note of her birthday immediately so that you don’t repeat this mistake again in the coming years. Belated birthday wishes are not an acceptable norm atleast amongst close friends.

Here are some tips on how to buy a birthday gift for your friend or partner.

If you are on a limited budget then this article is just for you- Shopping On A Budget.

Buying presents is not everyone’s forte. The following article gives you an insight on the types of gifts that you can present besides flowers, box of scented candles or chocolate hampers -A Practical Guide To Buying Gifts.

Being single is not a personal choice for many but life’s circumstances create situations where one is forced to make certain choices. Many give in to those choices and later regret their decision. Some fear these regrets and decide never to venture into them. Others take lessons from friend’s relationship and marital problems. This is a circle where you want to get in and once you are in, you want to get out.

There is still a stigma in certain societies where a woman is looked down upon for staying single. Gossipers think that she may have been heartbroken and too depressed to find a companion. Others believe, she is secretly married and her husband has left her. Fingers are always pointed at but not realizing the emotional wellbeing of that most talked about individual.

Staying in relationships that do not have a future is the worst relationship that one can get into. There is a ray of hope that maybe someday everything will be perfect but it rarely does. Emotional relationships are the most difficult ones to manage because the feelings are embedded deep and digging out the love, affection for that person even with a shovel and pickaxe never work.

Emotional scars rarely heal and even if they do, the marks always remain. It depends on an individual’s inner strength and willingness to forgive and forget. Another hurdle in a relationship is when one of the partners detaches and prefers to move on. Breaking up is easy for them because they have made up their mind what they want from their life partner and the current one, doesn’t fit the bill.

Strange but true, today’s world consists of individuals who follow the principle of “use and throw.” It is similar to that of a tissue. When you are done with the person, you dump him/her with some reason and move on to a new tissue. And yes, tissues come in varieties too. Some are with softer ply, scented, wet ones and so on.

Some women are adventurous who have tried out all the options of relationships and after experiencing them, have decided to stay single. Whether you are a man or a woman staying single is a personal choice. If you are a woman, certain societies do want to know why. If you are well supported by friends and family then the emotional stability is better. But then, do we always reveal what we genuinely feel inside?

But the reality-there is no prince charming, no true soul mate and no living happily ever after. These terms look appropriate in romance and fiction stories. Such fairy tale concepts look nice in Disney animation movies.

Staying single is not a curse. It is choice from staying away from cheating spouses, demanding and controlling mother-in-laws, and loveless relationships. Self sacrifice, adjustments should be done only for those who you think do deserve. The rest are out there just for some fun who steal away your self-worth and dignity and never look back.

Most people delve into the deeper meaning of the word happiness. They ponder; debate endlessly to seek the answer to “what is the definition of happiness?”

The search for happiness slows them down and some lose interest in finding it. Some feel possession of wealth is happiness, while others believe money can buy happiness. But what is this word that defines happiness?

To me, happiness is a state of mind. It is a feeling that can be experienced by any individual based on what they are feeling at that point in life and what they desire from life. A big bowl of candy will make a little child extremely excited. The sight of different flavored candies in his possession is happiness for that kid.

Winning a lottery for some people will be their ultimate happiness while for another individual being able to travel to all places of pilgrimage, participating in spiritual activities brings them happiness.

Happiness doesn’t ring the doorbell and walk right into our lives. Firstly, one needs to understand what makes them happy. Secondly, how will they go about finding this happiness? Once they have identified their happiness and its source, then they need a plan how to get it. After planning, comes the implementation of the plan, then monitoring the plan and then reaching out for the happiness. Then finally, if you set everything in perfect harmony, then you will surely deserve that happiness.

Yes! This certainly sounds like a lengthy and technical way to achieve happiness. But actually it is pretty simple. Find out what makes you happy and go look for it.

If you believe that a particular man or woman makes you happy then you should approach the person. You can be direct and say that you want him to be part of your life and propose. Or take a subtle approach, date him, spend time with him, let him understand you better and wait for him to pop the question. Once you know your goal, then it is half the battle won.

If you are not appreciated at your workplace, where your inputs are ignored and the pay barely covers your expenses, you will surely quit and find a better job. This is pretty simple. The job never gave you any happiness so you move on.
Searching for happiness is a never-ending task. Nothing satiates the human mind. If one has completed one task, they seek for the next. Seeking happiness can be an obsession and also at times an addiction.

Many give up on finding happiness and only dream of it, while others strive at it. Whatever maybe the source of happiness, it should not be forgotten. This is what makes life worth living for. An aimless life is a worthless life. If one learns nothing from life then that person has not appreciated the human form of life. Look inside your mind, spirit and soul, find out what truly makes you happy and devise a plan to achieve it. Then you will understand the real fulfilling sensation of being happy.

Real happiness is bliss and that can be achieved only when the human soul unites with the divine soul or receives enough grace that he is able to enjoy this bliss in spite of living in Kaliyuga and in the human form, in other words – Sat-Cit-Ananda. According to the religious text – Brahma Samhita, in it verse (Sloka) 5.1

īśvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahah anādir ādir govindah sarva-kārana-kāranam

Lord Krishna who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the prime cause of all causes.

But what we are trying to achieve here is to understand some basics so that we can use feng shui to harmonize our home and workplace. This feng shui advice is practical and cost effective. One can almost call this feng shui for dummies.

To bring about harmony and balance in the surroundings, we will first need to understand that by removing the negative energy, we can channelize the path for positivity. The following tips can be used for home, home office and workplace of any shape and size.

Feng Shui Tips For Home, Home Office And Workplace

1) Feng shui principles give a lot of importance to the positive or good energy called ch’i. Placing articles or objects in a specific direction can bring about instant results. The energy is able to flow smoothly, harmonizing the surrounding and with it the people.

2) A simple step in bringing harmony is making sure that all the toilet seats are closed after use. Similarly bathrooms and toilet doors too should always be kept shut. By practicing this, you prevent the good energy from leaving your home and entering the drainage system.

3) If you work from home and have a home office, make sure that you are not seated with your back to the door. When you are working with concentration and someone walks in, the chances are your chain of thoughts gets interrupted and it can even startle you. This automatically displaces the harmony of the mind and reflects badly on your work. You can change the direction of your work area and if that is not possible then you can place a mirror in front. This way your eye can automatically capture anyone tiptoeing in and out of your room.

4) Clutter in any form robs the harmony. A cluttered desk causes irritation, confusion and in turn low productivity which gives rise to stress. Make sure your desk is neatly arranged and the papers and files organized systematically.

5) Maintenance of your home is essential. Creaky door and window hinges, squeaky door knobs, burnt out light bulbs should be looked into. A little bit of grease or even applying cooking oil at the joints of hinges makes them smooth and noiseless. These things distract you and silently steal the good energy of the home.

6) Wind chimes work wonders. Their tingling and soothing jingle reduces stress levels and brings about happiness.

This easy feng shui guide is only a tip of the iceberg of the vast field of science of the ancient Chinese.

An untidy home is a direct reflection of its inhabitants. It can get gender oriented. The homemaker is usually stereotyped and is expected to look into these matters but now men too are held accountable for the upkeep of their love nest.

The biggest challenge in maintaining a smooth running and functional homely environment is clutter control. Families fail to realize the clutter around them until they start tripping over things; misplace their everyday stuff which gets hidden under a pile load of other articles and an occasional encounter with bugs and roaches.

Scattered clothes, toys, stacked unwashed dishes and so on are usually strewed across the flooring which creates a filthy environment. A cluttered house impacts the mental stability of its occupants. It brings about chaos, stress, emotional turbulence, a feeling of helpless and other negative emotions. It blocks the positive energy called “chi” which is known to bring about prosperity into the lives of the inhabitants.

Reasons For Clutter

1) Laziness-Procrastination and laziness lays the foundation for clutter. People don’t feel like arranging their things and keeping them in the right place.

2) Impulse Buying-Many times, people buy clothes, shoes and other accessories on impulse. They purchase them without thinking on how they will maintain them. Most of us always complain of lack of space which is the next reason for clutter.

3) Lack Of Storage Space-Clothes are overstuffed in cupboards, shoes out of racks, books and CDs scattered around the floor… does this sound familiar?

4) Hoarding-People don’t like parting with their personal possessions even if they don’t need them. They store it for a rainy day which is just an excuse. Clothes that don’t fit, stained, faded are never discarded.

Organizing Clutter

This may seem like a big challenge initially but once you know what needs to be kept or thrown away, then everything falls into place. Here is a simple plan to organize your home.

1) Start small. Take each section of the house and start arranging things.

2) Keep garbage bags handy so you can discard things as you proceed.

3) Make two piles, one to discard and the other to give away. Wearable clothes can be given away to charitable organizations. Similarly toys and other things that you don’t need can be given to someone who can make good use of them.

4) Maintain a dedicated space to most things like a laundry basket for your laundry, a toy basket where all the games can be stored etc.

5) These dedicated areas should be small so that it curbs your habit of hoarding.

6) Guide family members to adopt these de-cluttering habits so that they can also help in the general upkeep of the household.

7) The moment the clutter gets cleared; there will be an instant gratification to the senses as there is good circulation of fresh air. The bugs and insects will leave you alone. The overall environment will be lighter with the stale air driven away.

Decluttering your home is the best way to maintain sound health- emotionally, spiritually and physically. It keeps you in control of your household and strengthens your inner self to manage it with pride and dignity.

Indian jewellery has made a global presence not just because of its abundant mines of gold, silver and gemstones but because of the unique variety in its craftsmanship.

Indian women are always adorned in jewellery as it is a part of their culture. A married woman is supposed to always wear a mangalsutra (a special type of necklace which denotes that she is married. The designs and the materials used to make this ornament depends on the which state and culture she belongs to) followed by bangles, nose ring, finger rings, earrings, anklet and toe rings. During festivals women adorn themselves in larger varieties and further add ornaments to their bodies like an armlet, Mang ka Tikka (a head ornament that is placed in the centre of the forehead and extends to the back of their head, waist ornamentation and many more.

What sets Indian jewellery from the rest of the world is the intricate detailing of motifs, stylizing and symbolism that are closely related to nature and marks a particular era. Gold still takes a prominent place here followed by silver, diamond, precious stones and pearls. Each state of India has its own style of jewellery that denotes its origin.

The colour of gold in India too varies. The gold ornaments made in India are more luminous than the gold found in the US and UK markets. This is mainly because the gold here is 22 carat whereas most US outlets sell 12-18 carat gold. Sterling silver jewellery are more prominent in European markets.

The gemstone market in India is tremendously vast. Emeralds, rubies, garnets, amethysts, corals, sapphires yellow and blue, and turquoises are among the stones which are used widely to enhance gold and silver metals. Their combination creates uniqueness in many traditional designs which were once worn by the Indian kings and queens.
