A Foot In The Puddle
May 22, 2007
Have you ever experienced your foot getting wedged in a puddle? It is an awful feeling because you have ruined your beautiful leather shoes or your favourite pair of stilettos. You try and wriggle out, hoping that it is not so bad. Maybe a tissue will fix it. Later, you can find a quiet place and get the gunk out that is floating between your toes.
What if your foot has gone in so deep and the wriggling doesn’t work? You are now wondering what the passer-byes will be thinking looking at you.
“Clumsy fool, Ha -Ha couldn’t manage to skip over this tiny thing.”
The self-esteem is definitely squashed and soon the embarrassment surfaces on the rosy complexion. The more you struggle, it gets worse and who knows the other foot could join in too.
This situation can be compared to our writing. You are stuck in a plot and you don’t know how to get out. You may think that you have the perfect romance story but the characters just seem so pointless. You try and wriggle in new situations, hoping to distract the reader with new characters but in your heart you know that it is not what you really think is suitable. The more you think over it, the more you are trapped. Then comes frustration and this leads to poor writing.
Free writing helps. It enhances the creative writing process. Don’t think of a topic, subject, person but just write whatever comes to your mind. You can worry about the technical aspects like grammar, punctuations later. Get your mind and hand in sync and leap into a situation. See what is in front of you to help you begin and take it from there. The best thing about free writing is that no one is going to judge, criticize, or even reject you. This feeling of being detached from the outcome is so exhilarating. You are at peace with yourself and revive your creative power. Keep writing for the next five to ten minutes and experience the freedom.
It is okay to be stuck in a puddle and it is alright if the shoes get dirty. You will come out of it eventually and this will teach you to be more careful next time round.
