Desperate Times In A Writer’s Life
June 20, 2007
Working hard to please someone or to fit in is not uncommon. The need to feel wanted or accepted in a social situation can make anyone jittery. Being Miss. Perfect or playing the part of Mr. Right takes a toll on the physical and mental wellbeing. The end result… maybe you are accepted or rejected. If rejected, you loose your self confidence and develop a low esteem. If you are accepted, then you will have to keep up the charade for a long time.
Writers can also fall into this dilemma. We write a pitch and wait for the editor to respond and when there is an acceptance. It is time to deliver. In our over enthusiasm and eager to please, we take the closest date. At that time, the volume of research or interviews needed to complete the article doesn’t come into the picture.
The outcome – burning the midnight oil, overloading the mind and creating uproar of the body clock. If this article turns out perfect, then getting the first stage of ulcer was worth it. But if it was not satisfactory, you loose everything. The easy way to this is to be practical. Take your time and decide the amount of work that is needed. Add three days to your liberal estimate. Be thorough and if you finish before the deadline then that helps as an added advantage for your future projects with that editor.
Keep your writing life simple. It is never smooth but knowing how to add new dimensions and churning the positive aspects with the negative gives a uniform blend.
