Stumped In The Middle Of A Story?

May 10, 2007

There are times when a writer is lost or confused about the plot. ”The characters should speak for themselves and should move around in the plot” – this is what I have read in many tutorials. But how am I going to do that when I don’t know where the story is headed?

Getting stumped in the middle of a story is not uncommon. The best way to handle this is to let it remain as it is. The more you force yourself and read the beginning repeatedly, it will only get you down. Leave it for later. Maybe you need a break and think from another angle.

One option is to start another story and see how you can link the two together or have parallel stories running like a flashback. Some writers prefer to start the story from the end. The possibilities are endless. It is your story and you have the freedom to express it in any way you see fit. Just don’t let the initial hurdles block your creative flow. It is very easy to give up but the satisfaction of finishing this incomplete piece will give you the joy that can only be experienced.

You will know what I mean, when you finish one yourself.
