The Verdict Of Failure And Success In Creative Writing

December 17, 2007

Worrying It is the end of the year and everyone gets nostalgic. The recap of the year’s good and not so good events zip pass our minds. We writers too do the same.

Even if some of us avoid getting involved in such frivolous judgmental behaviour, the joyous season plays host to such thoughts. The end of the year brings friends and relatives close together who sometimes will grind typical questions about our career that we are backed up against the wall and find no escape.

“So how’s the writing career? Are you really making any money? Are your books available on the Amazon top ten lists? Did you win any award?”

To face such questions you really need to have a successful list of published work or find some interesting topics so that you give a curve ball before these queries come up. Even if you do manage to dodge everyone, can you really escape from yourself? There are days where you get over the rejection notes and focus back to work. But then there are weeks when you want to know why the note stated “We have decided not publish your story.” There was no reason given and you have no clue what you have done wrong. But you still persist. So when you know in your heart that you are trying to make your presence in this profession, why shy away and avoid facing the world.

Don’t give yourself the verdict that since you were not a big success with a writing contract with large figures on them, you are not a worthy writer. The New Year is few days away with a whole new window of opportunities. The unsuccessful attempts of the last year shouldn’t be carried forward. Join in the celebrations and use your creative words to create a blurb exclusively for relatives. Let your confidence and positive attitude win everyone’s hearts that they won’t care to find out what you do for a living.

Happy New Year!!
