Every year we do gauri pujan, and as a custom my mom prepares naivedya on second day. We serve this delicious food to gauri and then we have our usual lunch. But the plates, usually 3 plates prepared to serve the food to gauri are untouched till next day. Meaning those plates are kept just like that and are eaten on next day afternoon. My question is, why do we need to keep that food till next day, as the food may get spoiled and eating spoiled food is always not advisable? Is there any significance to not to eat that naivedya food on the same afternoon?

PARNAM I am living abroad since very2 long time and belongs to a punjabi family. MY daughter actually all of us want to bring GANPATI BAPPA in our house.BUT we DONT know the COMPLETE VIDHI about STHAPANA.A silly question You have to be basically from MAHARASHTRA or anbody ,anywhere can perform the GANPATI SATHAPANA ritual. Please help me and explain me how and when i can do it or should i wait for next year

Dear Padmini,
Our knowledge is not as advanced as a person who is in religious authority. You will have to consult a priest who has to do this puja for you, especially because it is connected to speed up your marriage. The description given in this post are the activities and rituals performed during Ganesh Chaturthi and it is strictly under the guidance and consultation of a panditji/guruji.

Please tell me all about it, how long would it be performed, the required materials and all that I need to know about this puja.

Hi Anuradha,
Thanks for writing in. Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law’s demise. Regarding your question-personally I feel whatever you wish from your heart to offer you should cook that. You can make puris, sheera or rice kheer with lots of dry fruits or home-made shrikhand with freshly pounded cardamon and saffron.
Along with that some – sabji like mixed vegetable, dal, pulao or lemon rice. If you have specific traditional receipes in mind then you will need to ask your husband what all was cooked and look for the ingrediants and receipes online.

I am a christian married to a Brahmin. My mother-in-law has been doing the cooking for this festival all the time, but unfortunately she expired December last and I would like to follow the tradition and so the request to know the menu to be prepared for the food.

Dear Prabha,
Thanks for your interest. This is what we know of Shri Gauri Puja. The vidhis vary from state to state and from family to family. It is best that you consult a Vedic priest who will be able to offer proper guidance. The Kalash Sthapana rituals requires special mantras which only a learned brahmin priest or Purohit or Guruji will know. It is always advisable to do the Puja under their guidance so that the Goddess is not disrespected and resides happily amongst us.
