Lord Ganesha Our mission of posting these stories is to help people understand how to make best use of the blessings that are conferred on them by God.

Gajanana/ Gajanan Vs Lobhasura:

Once, Lord Kubera, the treasurer of the gods traveled to Mount Kailash to pay his respects to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He was mesmerized by the radiant beauty of the goddess and relentlessly gazed at her. Goddess Parvati was extremely annoyed. Suddenly, her attractive visage transformed into an angry expression. This rattled Lord Kubera. At that instant, from the scared persona of Lord Kubera, a demon called Lobhasura came to life.Lobhasura went to Shukracharya and requested him to initiate him as his disciple. The Guru gave him the Panchakshara Mantra (Panch – Five, Akshara – Letter) Om Namah Shivay and directed him to go to the woods and contemplate on these powerful words.  In a secluded area of the forest, the mighty demon bathed and applied ashes on his body. Then he sat in a lotus position, directing his mind on Lord Shiva and recited the given mantra.

Lobhasura remained without food and water with the earnest desire to appease the Lord. Finally, his efforts were rewarded when Lord Shiva manifested before him. He was overwhelmed to see his Lord face to face and bowed to touch his feet. Lord Shiva was extremely pleased with his ardent devotee and bestowed him a boon. This blessing transformed him into a fearless leader of the three worlds. The result of this powerful boon was that Lobhasura gathered a mammoth army and conquered all the kingdoms on earth. Then he attacked heaven and vanquished Lord Indra to capture his palace and kingdom of Amravati. Defeated and furlong, the king of gods went to seek refuge in Lord Vishnu. To end the reign of the demons, Lord Vishnu mounted on his vehicle Garuda and faced Lobhasura in a combat. The boon bestowed by Lord Shiva was so powerful that no one could face the immense resiliency of this valiant demon, not even Lord Vishnu. Lobhasura realised that the protector of Lord Vishnu and all the gods is Lord Shiva and sent his messenger to Lord Shiva.

“You either fight the all powerful Lobhasura or leave your abode, Mount Kailash,” said the messenger.
Lord Shiva realised that his magnanimous virtue had granted such a boon so he left his abode. This was the joyous moment of Lobhasura’s life. Soon under the demon’s leadership all the pious activities came to an end. Everywhere there were relentless sins committed. All the seers and the entire Brahman had no choice but to tolerate and suffer. Raibhya Muni (Sage) suggested to the gods to pray to Lord Ganesh. Our Lord was easily pleased with their worship and promised his earnest devotees that He would end this oppressive rule. Lord Gajanana sent Lord Shiva to Lobhasura with a message.“Surrender and seek refuge in Lord Gajanana, and you will lead a peaceful life. Or get ready to fight a long battle.”

Shukracharya came to the aid of his disciple to try and convince him that surrendering to Lord Gajanana would be the only way he would achieve bliss. Lobhasura understood the significance of Ganesh Tattva and fell at the feet of the Lord and repented. Lord Gajanana forgave him and ordered him to go to Pathal Lok (Nether World) and never return.
The sages and seers rejoiced and sang the glories of Lord Gajanana.
