Shri Ganesh Yantra

August 25, 2007

Yantra A yantra is an instrument, a talisman which facilitates in focusing and contemplation. It consists of series of geometric patterns where the mind concentrates at the centre and it provides an aperture / doorway to achieve higher levels of consciousness. This is usually made of copper.

Each yantra contains different frequencies and energy patterns. During meditation the mind gets in tune with the power resonating from the energy of a particular yantra and gets amplified. The sign of David, the Christian Cross and the Pyramids are some of the examples of yantras used in different religions. This is also plays an important part in the Tibetan Tantric meditation.
All yantras have certain basic elements like an infinite point (Bindu), triangle (Trikona), a six pointed star (Shatkona), a circle (Chakra), the square (Bhupura) and the lotus (Padma). Their different combinations are used to represent various deities. Yantras are used for various reasons for example; to possess wealth one uses Mahalaxmi Yantra, Kubera Yantra, Shri Yantra, Shubh Labh Yantra etc. To maintain good health, yantras like Mahamritunjaya, Surya, Mangal etc. are popularly used. The Ganesh Yantra is used for prosperity.

Adi Shankaracharya had explained that when this is placed on the main door of a household, it helps to ward away negativity and evil. It is a symbolic energy of the Lord so it is also placed in the shrine where it remains undisturbed and respected just like the idols of various deities. Before placing the yantra, one needs to purify it. There are prescribed rituals for purification and the following mantra is recited.

Om Hareeng Shareeng glung gang Ganpatiye var vard Sawjanam me Vashmanayte Savaha Tha

The bija mantra or the root mantra of Ganesh is Aum Gung Ganapati Namah. This contains the power of the Lord. His energy gets resonated when one repeats this mantra fervently with devotion.
