10 Ways To Overcome Tiredness
October 9, 2007
It is the beginning of the week and you are counting days and hours to spend the weekend sleeping again. It is time you learn how to give a quick boost to your energy levels.
1) Reach For Vinegar: Fluctuating blood sugar levels are major triggers of tiredness. This is caused by eating high-GI foods such as white break and corn flakes. But a tablespoon of an acidic food such as vinegar or lemon juice decreases a food’s GI. Vinegar on breakfast cereals might not taste great though, instead use one tablespoon of linseeds for the same effect on morning meals.
2) Repeat The Word “Yawn” 20 Times: It will make you want to yawn-but don’t stifle it. New research has found that yawning sends a surge of cool blood to the brain, giving you instant energy boost.
3) Straighten Up: If you spend days slumped over a computer, you are likely to suffer blood-flow fatigue, where poor posture prevents optimum blood flow to the brain. (Read “Good And Bad Posture Affect Blood Pressure” to get a better insight)Spend 60 seconds every hour doing the following exercise: Pull your chair away from the desk and plant your feet flat on the floor. Rest your forearms on your desk and relax your shoulders down and hold for a few deep breaths.
4) Nibble On Chocolate: Eating a bit of chocolate helps as it contains high level of anti-oxidants.
5) Drink Water: Dehydration causes tiredness. Just 2% water loss affects mental functioning. Cold water hydrates fastest. It is good to sip water after phone calls as the mouth gets drier with talking. (Read The Benefits Of Drinking Water to keep the body in optimum condition.)
6) Drinking Juices: A sluggish liver leads to fatigue as it is involved in the creation of those energizing thyroid hormones. A daily juice of half a lemon, one carrot, one beetroot, quarter of a red onion, a handful of broccoli and a handful of dandelion leaves help. (Read Homemade Health Drinks for better understanding the needs of the body)
7) Aromatic Oils: Aromatherapy can quickly boost your energy levels. One drop of peppermint oil and two of lime sends your energy soaring. Adding this to a tissue and inhaling it, refreshes you and back in action. (Read The Art Of Relaxation for more information)
8) Pressure Points: Massaging at pressure points relaxes you. Tap the top of your head where the acupressure point sishen-chong is located. It stimulates the nerves that release brain chemicals that modulate attention and alertness.
9) Check The Thermostat: We are naturally programmed to have a dip in energy between 2-4 pm each day, but according to circadian rhythms this will be worse if you are in a room around 20C/70F. Keep things about 16C/60F.
10) Use Of Light: Stand in front of a mirror and shine a light into one eye for 30 seconds, make sure that the light is not too bright. If your pupil dilates instead of contracting and staying small, it is a sign that your adrenal glands that produces stress hormones are under pressure. Adrenal fatigue us a common cause of tiredness. But eating little and often increasing levels of B vitamins and drinking liquorice tea can all support them.
