Carbohydrate Rich Diet Help To Think Faster
October 6, 2007
A study states that a low carbohydrate-high fat diet and high carbohydrate-low fat diet both improve weight loss, enhances mood and speeds up thinking.
Grant D Brinkworth of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization-Human Nutrition, in Adelaide, Australia told Reuters health that in overweight and obese patients, following an energy restricted dietary plan for weight loss is associated with improvements in mood, regardless of macronutrient composition. A high and low carbohydrate diets seem to boost the speed of cognitive processing.
Grant and his colleagues compared mood and cognitive function in overweight or obese but otherwise healthy men and women between 24-64 years old. Over 8 weeks, the participants followed one of the two diets similar in caloric and macronutrient content. The researchers found no changes in mood among the 93 participants. However there was a small group difference favoring the high-carb dieters, in the speed in which they performed intelligence and reasoning tests. The finding suggests that very low carb diets may offer less benefit than a high carb diet for improving cognitive function. This report is available in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
