Dangers Of Atkins Diet

November 16, 2007

Atkins US researchers reported that high-fat Atkins diet can cause long term damage to blood vessels, as well as some of the inflammation linked with heart and artery diseases.

In contrast, low-fat regimes such as the South Beach and Ornish diets lowered cholesterol and appeared to benefit artery function. They said, “ It really is the Atkins diet that is the worst,” said Dr. Michael Miller, director of Maryland Medical centre in Baltimore.

“The Atkins diet caused the LDL levels to go up by about 7% whereas the Ornish and Beach diets caused LDL to go down by 7-10%.” Low density lipoprotein or LDL is the “bad” cholesterol that clogs blood vessels.
