August 16, 2007
Feet are often neglected by many with the thought that no one looks down at them. Most feel that they are well hidden in their shoes. But avoiding their daily upkeep can prevent fungus and bacteria causing bad odor, athletes foot, ingrown toe nails and foot infections. Selecting improper footwear can lead to bunions, corns etc.
10 Simple Foot Care Tips:
1) A simple routine done over the weekend can be exceptionally helpful in the long run. Take a tub of warm sudsy water and soak your feet in it. This really plays a dual role-cleans your feet as well as relaxes you. Take a soft nail brush and gently run it under your toes. This loosens the dirt accumulated under the nails and making the nails soft.
2) There are different varieties of foot scrubbing brushes as well as pumice stone available that gently exfoliates the skin and scrubs away any dead cells.
3) Wipe the foot dry with a soft towel. Most people ignore drying their feet thoroughly, especially between the toes where moisture accumulates. They wear the socks and shoes for hours and this can lead to fungus and bad odour.
4) Trim your toe nails with a nail cutter which is designed specifically for toes. People have a tendency to get the toe nails deep so that it takes a long time to grow back. Sometimes this can lead to nail ingrowths which can be very painful.
5) Moisturize your feet with a good foot cream. This softens the skin and also improves circulation.
6) It is essential to change your socks frequently. To avoid bad odour, a foot powder is also recommended.
7) Women wearing stilettos all day can suffer from back aches because the constant balancing of the body weight on the pointed heel can put a pressure on the lower back. They also have shortened Achilles tendon. Prolonged wearing of very tight stilettos is known to cause bunions.
8) Corns are very common foot problems. There are many reasons why they are formed. One of the most common causes is wrong choice of footwear. There are corn removing pads available but it is always best to check with the doctor before using them.
9) Always buy a shoe of the exact size, as it opens up one fourth to take the foot shape. Avoid selecting a larger size, thinking that you can skip a shoe bite.
10) Make sure that there is enough padding in the insole when selecting sandals with high heels. A badly designed shoe can increase the chances of foot problems.
