Loneliness–The Urban Lifestyle Syndrome

July 5, 2007

Loneliness is an emotion that one can feel even if they are with a room full of people. There are many couples who are married, have a family and still deep inside continue to feel empty and lonely.

There maybe many reasons to experience this feeling. It could be lack of goals, financial dependency, a feeling of remorse of a decision taken and the inability to follow through with it. Maybe the death of a spouse or giving up on the challenges that life throws at them from time to time. We typically stereotype single individual living alone as lonely but it is not so. Everyone gets lonely at a stage in their life. Some of us are good in masking it while others admit it and the rest linger with this feeling of loneliness.

Living in solitude can be very blissful if you know how to enjoy every minute of it.

  • Planning is the key to everything. Get order in your day to day life.

  • Make a list of errands you need to run monthly like paying your bills and other expenses.

  • Keep the fridge well stocked. It will be easier if you stick a checklist and jot down the things that need to be refilled. Then the trip to supermarket is smoother.

  • Keep a day for maintaining the cleanliness of your house.

  • Spend a day at the bookstore and catch up on the latest books and music. So when you are back from work, you will be eager to read the book that has been making raves.

  • On weekends, you can spend it by sleeping late, or cooking something new from cookbooks or go out with friends.
  • You can take up gardening or learn the skills of growing miniature plants – bonsai.
  • You can hire a bicycle and enjoy a ride for the day. It will be a new activity and keep you fit.

  • There are plenty of gyms, yoga institutes, Pilate classes that you can enroll and re-energize after work or earlier in the morning.

  • If you can manage to look after a pet then they are great to play and spend the time with. Or even maintaining an aquarium is a lot of fun.

  • Get a new hairstyle, update your wardrobe and be with the trends of the season.

  • You can volunteer your time with charitable institutions. Organize events to raise funds.

There are so many ways to fulfill your dreams and ambitions. So the focus of life should be in achieving those goals which makes you happy and content. Being with a partner doesn’t always guarantee true happiness. Each one should seek out their purpose in life and keep finding the means to reach it.

If these points are kept in mind then loneliness will only be a word that can be found in the alphabet L of the dictionary.
