If you felt a pit in your stomach watching videos on how surgeons perform liposuction and gastric banding surgery on a patient dealing with overweight, then you are going to be amazed with a new breakthrough in science.
According to the news reports by ABC.com® a sixty-year old woman underwent brain surgery to deal with her obesity. It seems she had tried everything from dieting to bariatric surgery and decided to try brain surgery to rectify her eating disorder.
This particular surgery deals with deep brain stimulation where electric currents are passed to certain centers of the brain that control various activities. In this case, the area that dealt with hunger and its satisfaction. The needles are inserted where these zones are situated, wires are then placed underneath the scalp and a battery pack is located in the clavicle.
Obesity is a serious global problem and we definitely need to educate people on the do’s and don’ts of eating. Obesity should not be taken casually because this leads to heart disease, diabetes and reduces life expectancy by twenty years.
Being overweight is not a curse. It can be managed with proper counseling and diet. Most people who are obese usually eat because of their emotional instability. They are overstressed, lonely and depressed. They indulge in binge eating and that totally distorts their balance of eating. Feeding the body is the only way to control their emotional turmoil. But there is nothing that cannot be rectified, if caught at an early stage.
Controlling food portions is the best way to manage weight. Drinking water, consuming small meals and daily exercises is the only healthy and recommended way to lose weight. This process is not an overnight success but a sound and realistic approach to life. Surgeries to control morbid obesity may become popular. But not all of us can foot the bill. Besides, are these procedures worth all the pain and recovery days spent in hospitals?
Losing weight is not rocket science. It only needs determination and balancing what you put in your mouth.
