Spinach-The Leafy Vegetable With A Difference
August 2, 2007
Ever wonder whether Popeye, the sailor man’s power from eating a can of spinach really made him stronger or was it just a myth to encourage children to develop a liking to this leafy vegetable? Researches have proved that there is some truth behind this cartoon character. Following are the benefits of adding spinach to the diet.
1) The calcium content in spinach strengthens bones.
2) It contains vitamins like A and C, along with fibre, folic acid, magnesium and various nutrients which help to control colon cancer lung and breast cancer.
3) It protects against heart diseases.
4) Spinach contains flavonoid that helps to protect us from age related memory loss.
5) It prevents cataracts and muscular degeneration.
Cooking spinach is vital because it has water soluble vitamins which can be destroyed with over cooking. It is best to eat it slightly steamed with other vegetables or in soups. It also can be blended with carrots which makes a delicious vegetable juice.
