What Causes Skin Damage?
July 18, 2007
Skin requires delicate nurturing to retain its youthfulness and radiance. Essentially it needs hydration, blood circulation and right cleansing. Hydration is achieved by drinking sufficient amount of liquids in form of water, juices and smoothies. Blood circulation can be enhanced by some form of physical activity or exercising. Cleansing is necessary to keep the pores clean and allow the skin to breathe.
Skin can get easily damaged and here are some of the factors causing it.
1) Chemicals: Skin damage can occur due to excess chlorine in the water. This chemical is used as a disinfectant and found in all swimming pools. This gets absorbed easily and causes skin irritations, making it dry and itchy. It also affects the eyes and hair. The eyes get reddish and can cause a burning sensation. There is itchiness of the scalp and leads to hair fall. It is advisable to take a shower immediately after a swim. Lotion or cream should be applied to keep the skin supple. It is best to wear a swimming cap to protect the hair or wash it with non-chlorinated water and then apply a conditioner. Certain conditioners are available which can be used before swimming. This acts as a coating and prevents hair damage. The eyes should be protected using the swim glasses.
2) Smoking: It may seem that smoking only affects the lungs but it is not completely true. Tobacco products deeply affect the skin. It leads to wrinkles and the prolong use can also cause tissue damage. A smoker’s skin looks prematurely aged because of the inhalation of the toxic smoke.
3) Sunburn: Overexposure to the sun is detrimental to skin. It may not always appear right away. Sometimes it takes few hours and one can feel it when they touch the burnt area. In fair-skinned individuals it may take several days to appear. The skin gets dry and starts to peel. It is best to apply a lotion and avoid the sun for few days. The skin takes its own course and heals. The best way to avoid excessive sun exposure is to always apply a sun screen with high SPF. Wear hats, caps or scarves. Always wear tinted glasses to protect the eyes. If you are going on treks or know that you will out shopping for long hours then try to wear clothes with longer sleeves so that you are protected completely.
