September 12, 2007
There is nothing to be alarmed if you are a single woman yearning to go on a holiday on your own. It is just that one should be aware so that they are not fooled or attract unnecessary attention to themselves when traveling. Here are some simple pointers which single women can follow when they are traveling alone.
1) The luggage tags should have office address instead of home.
2) Make sure the luggage tags are turned around or have a flap to cover it so that other passengers can’t look at it and memorize the details.
3) At the airport, it is best to take printouts in duplicate so that personal information can be given across to the authorities when asked for instead of saying it a loud for everyone to hear.
4) When waiting at the airport, it is wise to loop your overhead bag around your leg, or if you have a small handbag keep it on your lap, incase you fall asleep. Do not leave your baggage with anyone even if you are required to use the restroom.
5) Ask for an aisle seat on the flight, instead of getting cramped in the middle. A window seat is not always comfortable, incase you would like to walk around to stretch your legs or use the facilities.
6) Avoid chit chatting with the person sitting next to you and giving out the nature of your trip or your occupation. Remember there are people ahead and behind you who could be listening in.
7) At your holiday destination, carry your handbag across or backpack in front of your body in crowded areas, buses or trains.
8 ) Make sure you have confirmed reservations in the hotel of your choice. Pass on the phone numbers of the hotel to your family and friends in case of an emergency.
9) Always carry a pocket torch and a whistle to alarm in case you find yourself in any unseen danger.
10) Avoid wearing real diamonds or gold. Replace them with imitations during your vacation.
11) Wear comfortable, flat shoes so that you are able to walk swiftly or run if the situation demands it.
12) Wear a money belt under your clothes.
13) Avoid wearing designer labels and very flashy clothes. Try not to attract too much attention.
14) Always check the seal of your bottled water. Never accept drinks in opened bottles or cans . Make it a point to tell the attendant/waiter to open the contents in your presence.
15) Do not befriend any locals while sightseeing or accept any food or drink from them.
16) Travel in registered taxis and public buses.
17) Distribute money, credit cards in such a way that all are not kept together. Incase your wallet is pick pocketed; you should not be left helpless in an unknown city or country.
18) Many experts say that it is best to let go of your bag if someone grabs it. It is better than getting assaulted. There is no point in trying to become a superwoman.
19) Avoid dark, dingy streets in the evenings.
20) Go to well-known and popular eateries and restaurants to experience the local cuisine.
21) Avoid getting drunk.
22) In certain countries, women are required to dress in a particular way. Read guidebooks to find out the details. Observe what the local women wear and purchase similar clothing. Avoiding exposing your body and hurt the local sentiments.
23) Religious hotspots or in Muslim nations, women are required to cover their heads with a scarf, so carry one or buy one.
24) While visiting temples and other places of worship make sure you wear slip-on shoes or slippers as you are required to entire the premises barefoot.
25) Once you are aware of your safety requirements then you are subconsciously on guard and secure.
So enjoy your vacations and be an inspiration to others who only dream of traveling alone but are too chicken to make it happen.
